Purpose

Album cover art is often judged through the lens of an artist’s fame or a song’s popularity. This site exists to test a simple question: can a cover stand on its own, as art, stripped of that context?

Judging Criteria

Cool. Cute. Striking. Whatever you feel in the first second.

There’s no fixed standard — just tap whichever one grabs you.

How Ranking Works

Every matchup updates both covers’ ratings using the Elo rating system — the same method used to rank chess players. Win against a highly-rated cover, and your rating climbs a lot. Win against a weaker one, and it barely moves. Over enough matchups, the ranking settles into a rough consensus of what people found most striking, judged by cover alone.

Data & Credits

Album cover images are sourced from the Cover Art Archive, a collaborative project between MusicBrainz and the Internet Archive. Release and artist metadata comes from the MusicBrainz open music encyclopedia. Sleeve Off is not affiliated with either project. All artwork remains the property of its respective rights holders.
